Illinois Hunger Coalition
Announces Closure
After 36 Years

After 36 years of service, the Illinois Hunger Coalition (IHC) will wind down its operations and close this fall.

Since 1988, IHC has been a tireless advocate for ending hunger and food insecurity in Illinois, working through community organizing, education, policy advocacy, and direct support for individuals and families in need.

For nearly three decades, Diane Doherty led the Coalition with courage and compassion. Her passing this summer leaves behind a profound legacy of advocacy at the federal, state, and local levels, ensuring that food assistance programs remain accessible and effective. Diane’s leadership and fierce dedication helped shape a stronger safety net for thousands of Illinois families.

Though IHC is closing, the mission it carried forward is more urgent than ever. Hunger remains a daily reality for too many, and addressing it requires not only immediate support but also long-term solutions rooted in economic and racial justice. IHC calls on programs, coalitions, and advocates across Illinois to continue this fight—to expand anti-poverty initiatives, bring vital resources into communities, and empower residents to become leaders in shaping change.

The Illinois Hunger Coalition is deeply grateful to the countless individuals, partners, and communities who have stood with us since 1988. Together, we have demonstrated that change is possible when people organize, raise their voices, and act with compassion.

With gratitude,

Fr. Bill Vanecko
Board President, Illinois Hunger Coalition
